Thanks for the comment Alan. You are completely correct. CEO's and Creative Directors could use a little of this understanding, too.

Good article. The sooner all designers recognise that if something cannot be made to cost, quality and time, then it is only a piece of art. The best designs are those that work with the manufacturing processes and associated variability.

I couldn't agree more with Blake - one of our writers has just been talking to the senz guys (there's an article in the next issue) and its incredibly that a bit of clever thinking, some design thought and they're managed to pull it off. And according to Stephen (who wrote the story), these umbrellas are pretty much windproof as they claim.. even if he does look like darth vader with a big heed.

When engineering becomes a commodity, it is design that differentiates. We may lose on batteries, but we will win on consumer products.

We have a customer, Senz Umbrellas, who came up with an umbrella that doesn't invert in the wind. One of their distributors told them that they were the only company in the western world designing umbrellas; all of the others are designed at the factories in China.

Senz has sold over 100,000 units at about $50 each. The price is an order of magnitude higher, but it can justify more expensive designers.

I have one of their umbrellas. It's awesome.

I'm a third year Product Design Engineering student at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. It's actually only this semester that I started to do more "design" classes, such as industrial design and product development. I've previusly studied a few of the topics you've listed above, and am looking forward to seeing how they are integrated into my more creative classes!

I like the sound of what you've listed so far :)
